Tomorrow morning 22 teams of intrepid charity fundraisers will set off on a journey of 1219 miles in a fleet of banger cars painted up in elaborate style by local artists. The trip is a fundraising project to support the youth homeless charity, Roundabout, and will be the UK’s first ‘art on tour’ banger rally.
We are proud to sponsor Team Heist in this venture which is raising funds to support the expansion of Roundabout’s Homeless Prevention Service across the Sheffield city region.
Local businesses were invited to take up the challenge, purchasing a car worth no more than £650 and artists from the local community submitted artwork designs for the car bonnets to create some unique pieces which will be auctioned off for the charity after the rally.
Team Heist consists of Adam France and Dan Hunt of Heist Craft brewery and bar in Clowne, Derbyshire, and graffiti artist, Leigh Wilson (aka Trik09) who painted the Team Heist car. They became involved with the fundraiser through artist, Matt Cockayne, who set up the project with Roundabout and Sheffield City Council. Matt’s artwork adorns the bar at Heist Craft. We are one of Heist Craft’s suppliers and our Yorkshire Crisps logo adorns the sun visor on their car’s windscreen.
For the past 18 months, the team has been raising money through several different activities including bucket collections at Sheffield Tramlines during the live painting of the car; brewing a special beer with all profits going to the charity, and arranging sponsorship through local businesses. They have raised £2100 and together with the other 21 teams, the project has raised a total of over £45000 so far which is a great achievement.
The rally will set off from Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre on Friday 21st September, crossing the channel, driving down through France and arriving in Monte Carlo, Monaco four days later. The bonnets will be removed from the cars and will be taken back to Sheffield with the teams to be auctioned off to further boost the fundraising.
