The Spring Gathering
The Yorkshire Dales, in particular, Wensleydale and Swaledale, have a history of sheep farming stretching back for hundreds of years, providing Dales farmers with both warmth from the wool, and food. Hardy hill breeds were developed to cope with the hostile upland environment of North Yorkshire. ‘The Spring Gathering’ – a unique sculpture carved in elm wood by chainsaw artist, Andris Bergs, celebrates this heritage, portraying the shepherd with his trusty sheep dog and his sheep. This distinctive sculpture and can be seen in the small Dales market town of Hawes, North Yorkshire.
